Helping Rebuild Japan

In the wake of today's tragedy, the YouTube News Network would like to spotlight organizations that are accepting donations for the rebuilding efforts in Japan and the Pacific.  Together, we as a global community can come together in this time of need and make our world even better than it was before.  Thank you for your support.

Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on Friday. The magnitude-8.9 quake spawned a deadly tsunami that slammed into the nation's east coast, leaving a huge swath of devastation in its wake. Hundreds of people are dead and many more are still missing or injured.
Japan has often donated when other countries have experienced disasters, such as when Hurricane Katrina impacted the United States. Below are organizations that are working on relief and recovery in the region.
AMERICAN RED CROSS: Emergency Operation Centers are opened in the affected areas and staffed by the chapters. This disaster is on a scale larger than the Japanese Red Cross can typically manage. Donations to the American Red Cross can be allocated for the International Disaster Relief Fund, which then deploys to the region to help. Donate here.
GLOBALGIVING: Established a fund to disburse donations to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Donate here.
SAVE THE CHILDREN: Mobilizing to provide immediate humanitarian relief in the shape of emergency health care and provision of non-food items and shelter. Donate here.
SALVATION ARMY: The Salvation Army has been in Japan since 1895 and is currently providing emergency assistance to those in need. Donate here.
AMERICARES: Emergency team is on full alert, mobilizing resources and dispatching an emergency response manager to the region. Donate here.
CONVOY OF HOPE: Disaster Response team established connection with in-country partners who have been impacted by the damage and are identifying the needs and areas where Convoy of Hope may be of the greatest assistance. Donate here.

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS
: Putting together relief teams, as well as supplies, and are in contact with partners in Japan and other affected countries to assess needs and coordinate our activities. Donate here.
SHELTER BOX: The first team is mobilizing to head to Japan and begin the response effort. Donate here.

YouTube Acquires Next New Networks

The move, first hinted at in December, marks YouTube's first step into content creation. New York-based Next New Networks, whose Web site already positions it as a member of the YouTube family, produced viral hits such as "Bed Intruder" and "Double Rainbow," and in November 2010 launched "The One," a daily Web series for AOL's front page.
Google will pay less than $50 million for the company, the New York Times reported, citing two people briefed on terms of the contract. Next New Networks has raised $26 million from investment firms such as Spark Capital, Fuse Capital, and Goldman Sachs.
"We are extremely excited to announce the acquisition of Next New Networks. Since launching in March 2007, the Next New Networks team has built a highly effective platform for developing, packaging, and building audiences around original Web video programming, attracting over 2 billion views and 6 million subscribers across their partner networks of channels and shows," wrote Tom Pickett, director of global content operations and YouTube Next, in a company blog. "Within YouTube, Next New Networks will be a laboratory for experimentation and innovation with the team working in a hands-on way with a wide variety of content partners and emerging talent to help them succeed on YouTube."
Larry Podell, chairman of Next New Networks, will be director and global head of YouTube Next lab and audience development. In separate but related news, YouTube announced it had hired Alex Carloss, head of digital distribution at Paramount for the past six years -- who also worked at Real Networks and Electronic Arts -- to join the content-acquisition team, working with Robert Kyncl, who moved to YouTube about seven months ago after a seven-year career at Netflix, according to LinkedIn.
YouTube Next is a new team designed to boost the Web site's creator development and speed partner growth and success, Pickett said. The group also will head a series of YouTube Next branded programs and services built off previous partner development initiatives, such as the Partner Grants Program and a program that gave 500 partners $1,000 credits toward new camera equipment at B&H Photo, he said in the blog.
"The YouTube Next team and programs will expand our partner meet-ups and community events, increase investment in partner education and training and launch new capabilities in audience development," Pickett added.
The ultimate goal is to increase the number of video partners generating viable income via YouTube, he said. Although "many" partners made enough money on their video creations to buy a house or build a career, YouTube wants to help them grow those revenues, which were not disclosed, said Pickett.
"In fact, the number of partners making over $1,000 a month is up 300% since the beginning of 2010 and we now have hundreds of partners making six figures a year," he said. "But frankly, 'hundreds' making a living on YouTube isn't enough and in 2011 we know we can and should do more to help our partners grow."
Today, YouTube has more than 10,000 partners -- including entertainment conglomerates such as Disney, Turner, and Univision, YouTube said on its Web site.
In terms of dollars and cents, YouTube monetizes more than 2 billion video-views per week, globally, it said. Around 94% of the top advertisers listed by Advertising Age have run campaigns on YouTube and the Google Display Network. Within the past year, the number of advertisers investing in display ads on YouTube as increased tenfold, according to YouTube.
In the United States, 172 million Internet users watched videos online in November, the ComScore Video Metrix service said in late December. YouTube.com ranked as the top online video content property with 145.8 million unique viewers. Yahoo took the #2 spot with 61.8 million viewers, followed by Vevo with 50.3 million viewers, said ComScore.

Laughing Baby Video Goes Viral

With over 4 million hits and counting, this video of laughing baby Micah has gone viral.
Though the infant's infectious giggles are nothing but enjoyable, the story behind the laugh is entertaining, too. According to a recent post to the San Francisco Chronicle's online Mommy Files blog, baby Micah's seemingly un-ending laugh attack started as a reaction to dad Marcus McArthur's response to a job rejection letter.
According to KSDK-TV in St. Louis, Mo., McArthur is wrapping up doctoral work at St. Louis University and seeking work as a professor. He told the news station that upon receipt of a recent rejection letter, he ripped it in half. Baby Micah then retorted with fits of giggles. McArthur found the baby's peals of laughter infectious, so he grabbed his camera and started shredding more paper.
He then posted the resulting clip to video-sharing website YouTube. MacArthur told KSDK he uploaded the video about five weeks ago, but it went viral after actress Alyssa Milano shared it with her Twitter followers on Feb. 25, he said.
In her tweet, Milano said, "If this video doesn't make you smile, check your pulse."
Milano might be on to something: According to a 2006 study reported on by msnbc.com , laughing really is contagious. Apparently, our brains respond to the sounds of laughter by preparing facial muscles to join in on the mirth.
In the cited study, researchers played sounds of laughter while observing participants' brains with MRI scanners. Reports said sounds of laughter triggered responses in a portion of the brain known as the premotor cortical region, which prepares facial muscles to move and in this case, smile.
If you need something to put a smile on your face, here are some other favorite videos of infants giggling uploaded by YouTube users:
• Baby laughing at the Wii. This 10-month-old finds his dad's Wii golf skills hilarious.
• What is so funny? The baby in the video above has an adorable little giggle.
• Twin boys laughing at each other. These little guys crack each other up.
• Cutest baby laughing. The baby featured in this clip laughs so hard he shivers!
If you're the kind of person who'd rather laugh at furry babies, here is a cute animal video for you: Cute puppy whistle
